In honor of summer rapidly approaching, I wanted to share a few summer themed haiku. Haiku is a Japanese style of poetry written in three lines, the first line containing 5 syllables, the second 7, and the 3rd line with 5 syllables once again. Haiku also typically describes nature or the seasons, what better way to express excitement of summer and the ever closer new school season.

This haiku reminds me of how I felt at the end of my first year of teaching. What a sense of exhausted accomplishment!

I can’t help but be reminded of the Covid year here… A fresh start was needed. Thankfully in rural Kansas, we were able to regroup and march forward.

Personally, the third is my favorite as it evokes the beauty of the spring and summer growth, not only of the plant and animal life around us, but also as I get to watch the growth of my own children.
Which is your favorite and why? Share with me in the comments below!
