Summer Science Scavenger Hunt

As a mother and a full time science teacher, I am constantly looking for activities for my children to do in the summer – it’s a bonus if the activities are outside!
This outdoors activity is guaranteed to keep your kids or students outside for hours
Math Facts & Fluency Worksheets

If a student successfully completes their “Fast Facts” in one minute, I move them to the next level of difficulty. I typically give stickers or pencils as a reward to those who finish.
I use these for the first 3-4 minutes of class each day. I give students 1 minute to complete their worksheet. When finished, I collect those students who completed their sheet. Those who did not get a moment to finish theirs. We then talk through the answers to the sheet so students can make corrections if necessary.
The first year I taught junior high, I was amazed to find the majority of my students did not have their multiplication tables memorized.
Expression Solution Fusion

This math warm up activity is based on Peter Liljedahl’s “The Answers Are” thinking task. If you have not read his game-changing book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, you are missing out!
I will give my students a list of solutions. For example:
-16, -10, 1, 4, and 35
Then I tell my students the following:
I want you to create 5 expressions using each of the integers -10 through -1. You will use each integer only once. You will use one addition expression, one subtraction, one multiplication, and one division expression. The fifth expression is up to you to figure out, it will be one of the four.
I then send my students to vertical non-permanent surfaces (such as whiteboards) in groups of three. Only one student gets a marker, but every 1 minute, I ask students to switch who is writing.
Students will start to see patterns, such as the negative solutions have to be caused by either an addition or a subtraction expression, or that multiplication and division expressions have to go with one of the positive solutions.
Once they come up with an answer, I try to avoid telling students that they are “correct” rather, I want them to prove to me that their math is solid. I encourage them to keep their work up on the whiteboard so they can show me what they did and use it on later problems. Once they are sure their work is correct, I give them the next set of problems.
Some groups will obviously work faster than others. Continue to give them problems and avoid telling them how many they have left. If a group finishes the problem sets that you have for them, challenge them to come up with their own Expression Solution Fusion set!

Color By Code
I love using these color by code worksheets in my classroom. I will use them for a variety of reasons: to provide a brain break for students while also practicing new skills, as a sub plan in a pinch, as a review of old skills during my math interventions class, or just whenever students ask for them! I love to add the completed pictures to my wall and grow the collection throughout the year. It adds a pretty pop of color and students get an opportunity to admire their artwork throughout the year.
